Zun\u00e4chst bei der de Havilland Aircraft Company im Flugzeugbau besch\u00e4ftigt, erkennt er schnell, dass sich das dort angesammelte Wissen \u00fcber Aerodynamik und Leichtbau vortrefflich auf Rennfahrzeuge anwenden l\u00e4\u00dft. Vor allem Sperrholz hat es ihm, ob seiner Qualit\u00e4t von Stabilit\u00e4t und geringem Gewicht &#8211; angetan. 1967 gibt der Rennstall von Ron Harris einen Formel-2-Rennwagen in Auftrag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Costin entwickelt innerhalb von 127 Tagen ein Monocoque aus mit Metall verst\u00e4rktem Sperrholz, das eine besonders str\u00f6mungsg\u00fcnstige Karosserie tr\u00e4gt. Dieses ist wie eine Sicherheitszelle konstruiert, an die die technischen Komponenten montiert sind. So ist der Cosworth-FVA-Motor mittels eines Hilfsrahmens mit der Schale verbunden. Der 1600-Kubikzentimeter-16-Ventiler mit Lukas-Benzineinspritzung leistet 225 PS bei 9500 Umdrehungen, geschaltet wird mit einer F\u00fcnfgang-Hewland-Box.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besonders das mit einer hohen Plexiglas-Kuppel verkleidete Cockpit gibt dem &#8222;Protos&#8220; genannten Einsitzer ein markantes Aussehen. Die Form ist aerodynamisch so effektiv, dass der Harris-Costin mit einer Spitzengeschwindigkeit von \u00fcber 270 Stundenkilometern der schnellste Formel 2 seiner Epoche ist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Im Rennen kann sich die innovative Konstruktion jedoch nicht durchsetzten. Der Wagen ist zu schwer, die urspr\u00fcngliche Bodenfreiheit zu hoch und die Cosworth-Maschinen sind zu fragil.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Von der stabilen Bauweise jedoch profitiert der Mexikaner Pedro Rodriguez im sizilianischen Enna. Nach einer Kollission mit Jean-Pierre Beltoise auf Matra schl\u00e4gt der Protos auf eine Barriere auf &#8211; das Monocoque bleibt heil und Rodriguez entkommt dem Wrack unverletzt.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1967 startet Costins Konstruktion in acht Meisterschaftsl\u00e4ufen unter anderem mit Brian Hart, Kurt Ahrens, Rodriguez und Vic Elford am Volant.
