Bekannt wurde er durch die Erfindung des Lear Jets, des ersten erfolgreichen Gesch\u00e4fts- und Privatflugzeugs. Nachdem er 1931 sein erstes Privatflugzeug gekauft hatte, wandte Lear seine Aufmerksamkeit der Avionik zu. Er erfand ein Funkpeilger\u00e4t, Autopilotsysteme und das erste vollautomatische Flugzeuglandesystem. Ende der 1960er Jahre flo\u00df ein gro\u00dfer Teil von Lears Verm\u00f6gens in den Versuch, das Indy 500 mit Dampfkraft zu gewinnen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lear hatte ein Forschungs- und Entwicklungsteam, das sich mit Dampfkraft besch\u00e4ftigte. 1968 traf Bill Lear auf Ken Wallis, der an der Entwicklung von Andy Granatellis STP-Turbinenwagen von 1967 beteiligt war, und der Parnelli Jones fast den Indy 500-Sieg brachte. Wallis begeisterte Lear von der Idee, einen dampfgetriebenen Rennwagen beim 1969er Indy 500 einzusetzen. Angetrieben werden sollte der Wagen von einem Gegenkolbenmotor mit dreieckig angeordneten Zylindern, der drei separate Kurbelwellen antrieb. Die Leistung sollte etwa auf dem Niveau der konventionell angetriebenen Konkurrenz liegen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"810\" height=\"634\" src=\"https:\/\/www.enzo-und-ferdinand.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/thf103724-810x634.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12679\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.enzo-und-ferdinand.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/thf103724-810x634.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.enzo-und-ferdinand.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/thf103724-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.enzo-und-ferdinand.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/thf103724-768x601.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.enzo-und-ferdinand.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/thf103724.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Als Innovation diente eine Fl\u00fcssigkeit namens Learium, die angeblich bessere thermische Umwandlungseigenschaften hatte als Wasser, das aber die Erwartungen nicht erf\u00fcllen konnte. Vier Millionen Dollar allein kostete das rollende Chassis mit Vierradantrieb, das den 67er STP- und 68er Shelby-Turbinenautos sehr \u00e4hnlich sah, nur dass die Turbine nicht neben dem Fahrer sa\u00df, sondern der Dampfkessel dort untergebracht war. Der kompakte Motor fand Raum hinter dem Fahrer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Einen Monat vor dem Rennen in Indianapolis war jedoch noch kein Motor gelaufen, nicht einmal ein Dampfkessel existierte.
