Aufgrund der motorischen Unterlegenheit \u2013 es kommen Vierzylindermotoren mit maximal 1,5 Liter Hubraum zum Einsatz \u2013 sind Podiumspl\u00e4tze oder gar Gesamtsiege weit au\u00dferhalb der Reichweite. Daf\u00fcr braucht man ein potenteres Aggregat. Mit dem A210 glaubt die Equipe aus Dieppe ein gutes Basis-Chassis zu haben, was fehlt ist ein Dreiliter-Motor. 1967 bekommt Am\u00e9d\u00e9e Gordini, Renault-Haustuner aus Viry-Ch\u00e2tillon bei Paris, den Auftrag einen Achtzylinder zu entwickeln. Gordini nimmt zwei 1,5-Liter-Vierzylinder und verbindet sie zu einem konventionellen V8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In der Saison 1968 leistet das mit vier Weber-Vergasern best\u00fcckte Aggregat 310 PS, durch die Umr\u00fcstung auf eine Benzineinspritzung im folgenden Jahr sind es dann 350 Pferdest\u00e4rken, deren Kraft durch ein ZF-F\u00fcnfganggetriebe in Geschwindigkeit umgesetzt wird.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Der Achtzylinder entwickelt insgesamt nicht genug Leistung um konkurrenzf\u00e4hig zu sein. Auch das Chassis macht Probleme. F\u00fcr den st\u00e4rkeren und schwereren Motor ist der A 210 gr\u00f6\u00dfer und breiter geworden, was sich negativ auf das Fahrverhalten auswirkt. Namentlich starkes Untersteuern beeintr\u00e4chtigt die Fahrbarkeit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Im Fr\u00fchjahr 1968 gibt der A 220 sein Debut bei einem nationalen Sportwagenrennen, im September gehen dann in Le Mans vier der Langheckcoup\u00e9s an den Start. Andr\u00e9 de Cortanze und Jean Vinatier fahren den einzigen \u00dcberlebenden hinter den Favoriten von Ford, Porsche und Alfa auf einen entt\u00e4uschenden achten Platz.
