Der Testudo entstand, als General Motors Stylingchef Bill Mitchell den Italienern ein Corvair Monza Coup\u00e9 aus dem Jahr 1962 \u00fcberlie\u00df. Es sollte ein Test werden, ob der Wagen auf den europ\u00e4ischen Geschmack angepasst werden k\u00f6nnte<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Das Chassis wurde daf\u00fcr um 305 Millimeter auf 2389 Millimeter verk\u00fcrzt um auf stimmige Proportionen f\u00fcr einen Zweisitzer zu kommen. Die Karosserie aus Stahl- und Aluminiumblech wurde ganz traditionell \u00fcber einem Hartholzbock geformt, das riesige und aufklappbare Cockpitdach bestand aus Sicherheitsglas, versehen mit einem get\u00f6nten Plexiglasdach, um die Passagiere vor \u00fcberm\u00e4\u00dfiger Sonneneinstrahlung zu sch\u00fctzen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die innovativen Pop-up-Front-Scheinwerfer wurden nach oben gedreht. Die R\u00fcckleuchten bestanden erstmals aus Polykarbonat, sind so unauff\u00e4llig in die hinteren Sto\u00dfstangen integriert, dass die Karosserie sehr puristisch wirkt. Auf einen Lufteinlass an der Frontpartie konnte aufgrund der Verwendung des Heckmotors verzichtet werden, wodurch auch die Front glatt und stromlinienf\u00f6rmig wirkt. Das Interieur bestand aus Schalensitzen, einer L-f\u00f6rmigen Instrumententafel und einem srechteckigen Lenkrad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Der 81 PS starke luftgek\u00fchlte Sechszylinder-Boxermotor des Corvair war kein Ausbund an Kraft und Sportlichkeit, sorgte aber mit seinem Gewicht auf der Hinterachse f\u00fcr eine gute Traktion und eine gute Balance beim Bremsen.
