Der Prototyp basierte auf dem von March entworfenen Aluminium-Monocoque-Chassis des R87E, der 1987 in Le Mans antrat. Das Karosseriedesign wurde optimiert, um eine bessere Aerodynamik zu erreichen. Die neuen Karosserieteile wurden aus einer Karbon-Composite-Technologie entwickelt, die aus der Nissan Luft- und Raumfahrtabteilung stammte. Der Radstand wurde verl\u00e4ngert, um eine bessere Gewichtsverteilung zu erreichen und dadurch Handling und Stabilit\u00e4t zu verbessern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Der R88C wurde von einem \u00fcberarbeiteten Biturbo-3-Liter-V8-Motor mit der Bezeichnung \u201eVRH30\u201c angetrieben. Der Zylinderblock, der Zylinderkopf, das Einlasssystem, die Z\u00fcndung und das elektronische Steuersystem wurden in einer neu eingerichteten Abteilung im zentralen Entwicklungslabor von Nissan umfassend \u00fcberarbeitet, um die Haltbarkeit und die Kraftstoffeffizienz zu verbessern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die zwei R88C des Nissan-Werksteam konnten sich bei den 24-Stunden-Rennen von Le Mans 1988 die Pl\u00e4tze 15 und 23 sichern. Ins Ziel kam indes nur ein Wagen, der im Klassement den 14. Platz belegte.
