Das ber\u00fchmteste Rennen Amerikas hatte sich bereits als Magnet f\u00fcr die britischen Teams von Lotus, Brabham und Lola erwiesen, die vom Glanz des bedeutendsten Rennen der USA und nat\u00fcrlich auch von der H\u00f6he des riesigen Preisgelds angezogen wurden. Der McLaren M15, auf pure Geschwindigkeit ausgelegt, wurde f\u00fcr das Rennen 1970 entwickelt und war der erste McLaren mit Turbolader. Der stammte vom amerikanischen Hersteller Garrett und brachte den hinten angebrachten Vierzylinder-Offenhauser-Motor auf rund 650 PS.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">W\u00e4hrend einer Trainingssitzung vor dem Rennen geschah ein Ungl\u00fcck. Ein Tankdeckel \u00f6ffnete sich \u2013 er war auf Veranlassung der Organisatoren modifiziert worden und das auslaufende Methanol fing Feuer. Denny Hulme erlitt schwere Verbrennungen und konnte das Rennen nicht bestreiten. Ersatzmann Carl Williams qualifizierte sich als 19. und beendete das Rennen als 9., w\u00e4hrend sein Teamkollege Peter Revson aufgrund technischer Probleme auf Platz 22 zur\u00fcckfiel. Der M15 markierte jedoch nur den Anfang der Geschichte von McLaren in Indianapolis, denn das Unternehmen kehrte zur\u00fcck und holte drei Siege bei den \u201eIndy 500\u201c.
