Urspr\u00fcnglich gab es zwei Prototypen, die vom italienischen Karosseriedesigner Pietro Frua, der alle Glas gestaltete, entworfen wurde. Beide Wagen wurden im Herbst 1967 fertiggestellt und anschlie\u00dfend getestet, was f\u00fcr eines der Fahrzeuge in einem Unfall und der anschlie\u00dfenden Verschrottung endete. Der zweite kam in den Besitz des damaligen BMW-Gro\u00dfaktion\u00e4rs Herbert Quandt. Nachdem das Cabrio anschlie\u00dfend durch mehrere H\u00e4nde gegangen war, fand er schlie\u00dflich im M\u00fcnchner Allianz Zentrum f\u00fcr Technik eine Heimat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BMW gelang es schlie\u00dflich, das Einzelst\u00fcck zu \u00fcbernehmen und es reifte der Plan, das BMW&nbsp;1600&nbsp;GT&nbsp;Cabriolet an seiner Geburtst\u00e4tte in Dingolfing wieder in seinen Originalzustand zur\u00fcckzuversetzen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"810\" height=\"519\" src=\"https:\/\/www.enzo-und-ferdinand.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/BMW-1600-GT-Cabriolet-3.jpg\" alt=\"BMW\u00a01600\u00a0GT\u00a0Cabriolet\" class=\"wp-image-1742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.enzo-und-ferdinand.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/BMW-1600-GT-Cabriolet-3.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.enzo-und-ferdinand.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/BMW-1600-GT-Cabriolet-3-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.enzo-und-ferdinand.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/BMW-1600-GT-Cabriolet-3-768x492.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.enzo-und-ferdinand.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/BMW-1600-GT-Cabriolet-3-360x230.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dieses Projekt weckt Erinnerungen an ein interessantes Kapitel in der Geschichte von BMW. Im Entstehungsjahr des offenes Zweit\u00fcrers hatte das Unternehmen den Dingolfinger Fahrzeughersteller Glas \u00fcbernommen. Die Firma war seit 1955 als Produzent des Goggomobils erfolgreich gewesen, hatte 1964 das von Frua gestaltete Coup\u00e9 Glas&nbsp;1300&nbsp;GT und ein Jahr sp\u00e4ter den st\u00e4rkeren Glas&nbsp;1700&nbsp;GT auf den Markt gebracht. Zun\u00e4chst vereinbarte Glas mit BMW eine Vertriebsgemeinschaft, sp\u00e4ter folgte die vollst\u00e4ndige \u00dcbernahme durch die M\u00fcnchner. Die kompakten Sportwagen erhielten daraufhin die Hinterachse, die Sitze und den 105&nbsp;PS starken Motor des BMW&nbsp;1600&nbsp;TI, eine Niere f\u00fcr die Fahrzeugfront und die runden Heckleuchten der 02er Baureihe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die Idee, dem sportlichen Coup\u00e9 auch ein Cabriolet zur Seite zu stellen, entstand in den USA. Auf Anregung des Importeurs Max Hoffmann wurden eine neue Variante des Coup\u00e9s mit einem 2,0&nbsp;Liter-Motor sowie eine offene Version entwickelt. Bereits im Oktober 1967 lieferte Frua eine auf einer verst\u00e4rkten Bodengruppe montierte Cabrio-Karosserie, die in Dingolfing lackiert und vollst\u00e4ndig komplettiert wurde. Am 16. November konnte das BMW&nbsp;1600&nbsp;GT&nbsp;Cabriolet im Produktionsbuch des Werks als fertiggestellt eingetragen werden.
