Das Indianapolis 500 von 1968 war ein Beispiel daf\u00fcr: Der konventionelle AAR Eagle 68 mit Hubkolbenmotor und der radikale Lotus 56 mit Turbinenantrieb lieferten sich einen erbitterten Kampf um den Sieg. Das Turbinenauto f\u00fchrte die meiste Zeit des Rennens, hatte aber schlie\u00dflich neun Runden vor Schluss aufgrund technischer Probleme den Sieg dem Eagle 68 mit der Startnummer 3 von Bobby Unser \u00fcberlassen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unsers Auto setzte auf konventionelle Technik: Tony Southgate Design setzte auf ein klassisches Aluminium-Monocoque mit einer Aufh\u00e4ngung ausdoppelten Querlenkern und Stabilisatoren. Als Antrieb kamen entweder ein konventionelles 4,2-Liter-Ford-Aggregat mit acht Zylindern oder der 2,6-Liter-Offenhauser-Reihenvierzylinder mit Turbolader zum Einsatz, die beide Methanol als Kraftstoff verwendeten.
