Zum ersten Mal zog die British Motor Show aus dem altehrw\u00fcrdigen Earls Court ins brandneue National Exhibition Centre bei Birmingham um. Mehr Platz, mehr Moderne \u2013 und, wie sich zeigen sollte, eine B\u00fchne f\u00fcr eine der spannendsten Jaguar-Studien aller Zeiten. Pininfarina nutzte die Gelegenheit, um die Briten ordentlich zu beeindrucken. Basis war der Jaguar XJ-S, damals noch ein halbfertiges Projekt \u2013 und bei vielen Puristen ohnehin umstritten. Pininfarina nahm sich des Autos an und formte daraus den XJ Spider, einen offenen Zweisitzer, der sofort alle Blicke auf sich zog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unter der langen, flachen Haube schlummerte der legend\u00e4re 5,3-Liter-V12, ein Motor, der in den 70ern zu den kultiviertesten seiner Art geh\u00f6rte. Seidenweich, aber mit mehr als genug Kraft, um selbst gro\u00dfe Limousinen in Bewegung zu setzen. Pininfarina verpackte all das in eine italienisch inspirierte Form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die Linien waren flie\u00dfend, klar und spannungsreich. W\u00e4hrend das Seriencoup\u00e9 des XJ-S mit seinen breiten C-S\u00e4ulen und den ungew\u00f6hnlichen Heckleuchten viele Stirnrunzeln erntete, sah der Spider stimmig aus. Er wirkte wie eine moderne Hommage an den E-Type, ohne ihn zu kopieren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Und nat\u00fcrlich machten sofort Spekulationen die Runde: K\u00f6nnte Jaguar den Spider in Kleinserie bauen lassen? Angeblich flatterten in Browns Lane tats\u00e4chlich Anzahlungen von Kunden ein \u2013 einfach, weil sie das Auto haben wollten.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Am Ende kam es aber, wie es kommen musste: British Leyland steckte tief in der Krise, Streiks und Geldmangel bestimmten den Alltag. F\u00fcr so ein \u201eLuxusprojekt\u201c war schlicht kein Spielraum.
