Jedenfalls 1953. Das Jet-Zeitalter beginnt und Harley J. Earl, Chefdesigner von General Motors, \u00fcberlegt, ob die Gasturbine zum effizienten und \u00f6konomischen Antrieb von Autos taugt. Offensichtlich gibt es Vorteile: Ansaugen, Verdichten, Arbeiten und Aussto\u00dfen finden in verschiedenen R\u00e4umen nacheinander statt, weshalb nur wenige bewegliche Teile n\u00f6tig sind. Zudem ist die Turbine sehr kompakt. Sie beansprucht nur 30 Prozent des Volumens eines Hubkolbenmotors und kommt mit vielen Treibstoffsorten klar. Auch bei der Karosserie nutzt Earl modernstes Material: Fiberglas ist der Stoff, aus dem er sein Flugzeug auf R\u00e4dern baut.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Der XP-21, das erste funktionst\u00fcchtige Turbinenauto der Vereinigten Staaten \u2013 ist einsitzig, und \u00fcber dem Piloten thront eine tropfenf\u00f6rmige Plexiglaskanzel. Der Rumpf des Jets auf R\u00e4dern ist vorne spitz und ansonsten zigarrenf\u00f6rmig. Kurze Stummelfl\u00fcgel sowie ein zentrales Heckleitwerk stabilisieren den nur 1134 Kilogramm leichten Firebird. Das ist wichtig, weil die Whirlfire-Turbo-Power-Gasturbine \u2013 eine Eigenentwicklung \u2013 lockere 370 PS bei 13.000 Umdrehungen je Minute aussch\u00fcttet, die auf die Hinterachse wirken. Sp\u00e4ter versucht es der Rennfahrer Mauri Rose auf dem Indianapolis Speedway.<br>General Motors hat aber nie Geschwindigkeitsrekorde im Blick. Vielmehr geht es darum, die Gasturbine auf die Eignung f\u00fcr den zivilen Einsatz abzuklopfen.
