Der 175 PS starke Typ SB4, f\u00fcr die Saison 1908 gebaut, ist zwar schon im fortgeschrittenen Alter, aber der Brite John Eldridge nutzt die Gelegenheit, das stabile Chassis zu kaufen. Denn er hat einen 21,7 Liter gro\u00dfen Motor aus einem Kriegsflugzeug zur Hand, der gute Chancen bei Rekordfahrten bieten sollte. Das Reihensechszylinder-Unget\u00fcm kommt auch aus Turin und ist 1,80 Meter lang \u2013 zu viel f\u00fcr das Fahrgestell, das daf\u00fcr mit Teilen aus einem ausrangierten Londoner Bus gestreckt werden muss. Au\u00dferdem erh\u00e4lt der Bolide eine neue windschnittige Karosserie, und f\u00fcr die geplanten Rekordfahrten wird der Motor modifiziert: Aus einem Druckbeh\u00e4lter wird per Handpumpe \u2013 vom Beifahrer bedient \u2013 beiden Vergasern reiner Sauerstoff eingefl\u00f6\u00dft. Gemessen wird die Fahrtzeit \u00fcber eine Distanz von exakt einem Kilometer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eldridge erzielt bereits im ersten Versuch eine neue Bestmarke von 230,55 Stundenkilometern. Der findet allerdings nicht die geb\u00fchrende Anerkennung, weil der Fiat nicht den vorgeschriebenen R\u00fcckw\u00e4rtsgang hat. Eine Woche sp\u00e4ter startet der Brite erneut, diesmal mit regelgerechtem Getriebe. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Am 12. Juli 1924 erreicht er bei Arpajon in der N\u00e4he von Paris einen Durchschnitt von 234,98 km\/h \u00fcber den fl iegenden Kilometer \u2013 Eldridge hat einen neuen Geschwindigkeitsrekord aufgestellt. Es ist das letzte Mal, dass ein Weltrekord auf einer \u00f6ff entlichen Landstra\u00dfe erzielt wird.
