Die Idee ist, auf der Basis eines Stingray einen Muletto als Testwagen f\u00fcr die mutmassliche Gr\u00fcndung einer Chevrolet-Rennabteilung zu bauen. Ziel sind die 24 Stunden von Le Mans.<br>Chef-Ingenieur Zora Arkus-Duntov hat die richtige Basis im Schrank, von der das Management jedoch nichts wissen darf: ein Rohrrahmenchassis mit De-Dion-Aufh\u00e4ngungen und innenliegenden Bremsen.<br>Es kommt zum internen Wettbewerb f\u00fcr die Gestaltung des Wettbewerbswagens, den die Jungdesigner Peter Brock und Chuck Pohlman f\u00fcr sich entscheiden. Auf der Basis ihrer Zeichnungen Entwurf zaubert Shinoda in k\u00fcrzester Zeit ein Tonmodell, und schlie\u00dflich eine Fiberglas-Karosserie. Kennzeichnend f\u00fcr den offenen &#8222;Stachelrochen&#8220; sind der Radstand von knapp \u00fcber zwei Meter drei\u00dfig sowie 450 Kilogramm Gewichtseinsparung gegen\u00fcber dem Serienmodell. Am Ende wiegt der Wagen durch den gro\u00dfz\u00fcgigen Einsatz gewichtsmindernden Aluminiums weniger als eine Tonne. In den H\u00e4nden von Dr. Dick Thompson deb\u00fctiert der Wagen am 18. April 1959 auf dem &#8222;Maryland&#8217;s Marlboro Raceway&#8220; und wird gleich Vierter. Im Jahr darauf folgt der Gewinn der nationalen SCCA-Meisterschaft. Aber die Rennerei wird schnell durch das GM-Management beendet. Deshalb muss der Stingray Racer als Versuchstr\u00e4ger zur\u00fcck aufs Testgel\u00e4nde.<br>Der Wagen wird modifiziert. Mitchell baut einen zweiten Sitz ein, was f\u00fcr ihn selbst den Charme hat, dass er den Wagen auch privat nutzen kann.
