Toyota, seit vielen Jahrzehnten dem Rallysport verbunden, wollte sich gleichfalls dieser Herausforderung stellen. Mit dem Mittelmotorsportler MR2 glaubte man eine gute Basis zu haben. Schon ein Jahr nach dem Marktstart des Serienmodells legte die K\u00f6lner Sport-Dependance TMC der Japaner die WRC-Version MR2 (222D) f\u00fcr das zur Saison 1985 neu justierte Rallye-Championat auf.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die neue Gruppe S sollte die Gruppe B abl\u00f6sen. Das neue Regelwerk verzichtete darauf, 200 Homologationsexemplare zu fordern. F\u00fcr die Gruppe S waren es nur mehr 10 Wagen. Gleichzeitig wurde die Leistung der Gruppe-S-Autos auf maximal 300&nbsp;PS begrenzt. Zudem sollten die Gruppe-S-Fahrzeuge stabiler und sicherer&nbsp; werden. Der neu entwickelte 222D besa\u00df ein 2,1-Liter-Turbotriebwerk mit Trockensumpfschmierung sowie Allradantrieb. Mit dem 3,95 Meter kurzen Serien-MR2 hatte der Motorsport-Prototyp zumindest im Heckbereich kaum noch etwas gemeinsam. So basierte der 750 Kilogramm leichte Rallye-Renner auf einenm stabilen und leichten Gitterrohrrahmen. Hinter dem Fahrerabteil steckte der&nbsp; 600 PS starke Turbo unter einem komplett aufklappbaren Fahrzeugheck. Damit war das das Triebwerk, das sein maximales Drehmoment von 640 Nm per Schalterbet\u00e4tigung auf alle vier oder nur auf die hinteren R\u00e4der abgab, f\u00fcr Wartungsarbeiten leicht zug\u00e4nglich. Den Ladedruck des aufgeladenen Zweilitermotors konnte der Fahrer mittels Handrad im Cockpit stufenlos zwischen 1,3 und 1,5 bar verstellen und das. Das Leistungsgewicht des 222D betrug nur 1,25 Kilogramm pro PS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Der ab Februar 1985 entwickelte Toyota MR2 (222D) h\u00e4tte gute Chancen f\u00fcr Spitzenplatzierungen in der neu installierten Gruppe S gehabt, aber die Regel\u00e4nderung verhinderte den Einsatz.
