Es ist vorerst die letzte klassische Austragung des Rennens \u00fcber 500&nbsp;Meilen vor einer kriegsbedingten Pause. 1916 wird die Distanz auf 300&nbsp;Meilen verk\u00fcrzt, dann findet der Wettbewerb erst nach Kriegsende wieder statt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Der 1882 geborene amerikanische Rennfahrer italienischer Abstammung ist einer der erfolgreichsten Rennfahrer \u00fcberhaupt. In seiner 27-j\u00e4hrigen Karriere soll Ralph DePalma in 2.889&nbsp;Rennen gestartet sein und 2.557&nbsp;davon gewonnen haben. Zu einigen seiner spektakul\u00e4rsten Siege verhelfen ihm Mercedes-Rennwagen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Den Indianapolis-Siegerwagen kann DePalma vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg gerade noch in die USA holen. Beim Grand Prix von Frankreich am 4.&nbsp;Juli 1914 in Lyon, an dem DePalma mit einem Vauxhall teilnimmt, erlebt er den legend\u00e4ren Dreifachsieg der Mercedes-Rennwagen hautnah mit&nbsp;\u2013 dreieinhalb Wochen vor Kriegsausbruch. Der Vierzylinder-Vergasermotor des Rennwagens mit 4,5&nbsp;Liter Hubraum und 106&nbsp;PS Leistung ist eine fortschrittliche Konstruktion mit obenliegender Nockenwelle und&nbsp;\u2013 erstmals bei einem Mercedes-Motor&nbsp;\u2013 Vierventiltechnik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Das Fahrzeug, mit dem Louis Wagner in Lyon den zweiten Platz erzielt hat, verkauft Paul Daimler f\u00fcr 6.000&nbsp;Dollar an Ralph DePalma. Am 25.&nbsp;Juli 1914 \u00fcberf\u00fchrt dieser sein neues Wettbewerbsfahrzeug auf eigener Achse nach Antwerpen, wo der Wagen auf dem deutschen Frachter \u201eVaterland\u201c in die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika verschifft wird. DePalma selbst nimmt ab Le&nbsp;Havre den Dampfer \u201eOlympic\u201c und erh\u00e4lt auf See die Nachricht, dass in Europa am 28.&nbsp;Juli 1914 der Krieg begonnen hat. Bereits im August 1914 startet DePalma mit seiner Neuerwerbung bei zwei Rennen in Illinois und gewinnt.
